Revitalize our public education system

I have dedicated my professional life to educating and uplifting Utah's children. Unfortunately, the legislature has served as more of a hinderance than a help in that mission over the past several years. In addition to insufficient funding, programs like the Utah Fits All voucher and unfunded school safety mandates have drained resources away from the public education system, leaving local school boards to carry the burden and raise property taxes for residents.

Our community needs schools that are well-resourced, safe, and capable of preparing every child for a fast-changing world. Yet many classrooms are grappling with large class sizes, shortages of qualified teachers, outdated facilities, and growing demands on schools to meet the social, emotional, and academic needs of diverse learners. Strengthening public education requires a renewed focus on supporting teachers, expanding access to early learning, modernizing school buildings, and ensuring funding keeps pace with student needs and population shifts. When schools have the tools to deliver high-quality instruction and teachers feel valued and supported our students thrive, families feel more secure, and communities benefit from stronger, more capable next gen leaders.

What I'm Hearing:

  • Unfunded mandates and loss of local control

  • Growing class sizes

  • School closures

  • Teacher shortages and high turnover

  • Increasing student needs

What We Need:

  • Education bills passed with fiscal notes that cover necessary costs

  • Smaller class sizes and more individual support

  • Updated, safe, and adequately sized school buildings

  • More counselors, social workers, and mental health supports

  • Leave decision-making in education to local leaders
