WATCH: Teachers and Education Advocates Testify on Public School Challenges
The Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee held a hearing on challenges facing public school teachers. Witnesses included John Arthur, teachers and policy advocates, who testified that low pay, being under-resourced, lack of professional respect, overwhelming responsibilities, poor training, and unsafe workplace environments were key reasons behind teacher shortages. Committee Chair Bernie Sanders (I-VT) proposed the Pay Teachers Act, which would include a guarantee that teacher salaries are at least $60,000 per year.
